Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it-Proverbs 4:23
Confession, I have been through heartache. Terrible heartache that makes you question if love exist and not so terrible heartache that makes you question how timing can be so off, but nonetheless it was heartache.
For instance, this past summer I found myself letting go of another "situationship" (you know not a relationship, but a situation of collective events and feelings that lead to nothing but another lesson..lol). Anyway, as it was ending, I found myself praying on my past couple relationships and how I continued to end up in the same broken status at the end of all of them. God revealed to me a lot of different things from that prayer and in this blog, we are going to focus on one in particular.
Proverbs 4:23 says that "Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it." Often times we get into situations with people whose "heart conditions" don't match our own. Meaning the status (emotionally and spiritually) of their heart does not match the status of yours. Example, I once talked to someone who told me that the current condition of his heart it black, yup..black. Knowing that how in the world could I expect someone who is dealing with that much emotional pain to handle my heart if I put it in his hands? I'm learning through God that people are the exact physical representations of the emotional and spiritual state of their heart. To this day, I still pray for healing for his heart because he's just a good person with a hurt heart.
You ever hear the phrase "hurt people, hurt people", well there's some truth to that because if you're emotional bound up in pain and hurt, your reality to love and receiving it is bound up as well, and everything that you're now dealing with is flowing from that bound up heart. This is why it's important to make sure that you're not only equally yoked spiritually but emotionally as well (for those of you that don't know, a yoke is a wooden crosspiece that it fastened at the necks of two animals, as Christians we often hear the phrase "equally yoked" when it comes to relationships). This basically means that if you're equally yoked, when you're balanced and heading in the same direction, when one pulls one way you go together. Imagine what it will feel like when your heart is pulling one way and the other person is pulling another, yet your connected to each other...yeah it's not going to feel good. It's vital that you make sure that before you enter into any relationship that the "heart condition" of the person you're with is the same as yours. Even more, that your need to make sure that your heart is in the right condition to accept and give that same love back. Believe me, it sucks when someone who knows that they are not ready to receive open love and commitment from someone who is willing to give it, but in their quest to not feel lonely they leave the residue of their hurt and pain on the the person who was open to them in the first place. Often times what happens is that the openly loving person's heart ends up broken and then they become the one doing the hurting. Thus the cycle continues.
This is why God tells us "Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it." We have to be diligent when it comes to conditions of our heart because everything that we do or say flows from where emotionally and spiritually your heart is in. If it's broken, you're going to break others, if it's open and loving, you're going to be open and loving others.
I pray for each and every person that is reading this, that the conditions of your heart is one that is healed, one that is touched by God, one that is restored to receive the love, care, guidance and intimacy that God has purposed for you to receive. I pray that if you're hurting that your receive peace and joy, that you learn to guard your heart from those who are not ready for it. That the strength that you receive will be used to strengthen others and that you hand your heart over to God so that he can hand it over to the one that is truly meant to have it. I pray these things in God's great and holy name- AMEN
